On the occasion of the Panhellenic School Animal Day today, Thursday 4-4-24, our school carried out a series of activities to raise students' awareness of philanthropy issues.

Our school was visited by a group of volunteers from Animal Welfare Group Sirios in Heraklion, members of the University community, and two veterinarians. The children were presented with relevant information with speeches and videos, followed by a discussion about biodiversity and the various forms of life, and the recognition and respect of animal rights to promote sensitivity and empathy for every living being.

Animal rights leaflets, and bookmarks with instructions on caring animals were distributed.

The day is dedicated to the animals we love and care for. Parents could send photos of their pets and information about them to our Facebook page. We then flooded the internet with happy animals!

Also, many children wore clothes or accessories with animals on them.

Finally, there was a food collection for dogs and cats.

Some words about the day

Recent theories of bioethics converge on the necessity of moving away from anthropocentrism and emphasize the importance of valuing the life of all beings, and recognizing their intrinsic value. These theories raise concerns about the exploitation of living beings solely to satisfy human needs.

A holistic approach to global citizenship and sustainability education would be inadequate without the inclusion of animal ethics and the relationship of the planet's living beings to humans.
