Our school profile

The 47th Primary School of Heraklion is located in Heraklion, the largest city of Crete in southern Greece and the Southeast Mediterranean. Crete is known for its history, natural beauty, and hospitable people. Our city has an international airport with frequent connections to the largest European cities.

Our primary school applies to the Greek National Curriculum. It has 295 students and 19 teachers and 8 teachers of modules such as Music, Foreign Languages (English, French, German), Computers and Communications, Visual Arts, Theater and Physical Education. Our teachers have a high level of expertise in new technologies and many have PhDs and Masters degrees in their subject.

We prepare our students for life. The school is a pioneer in innovation and STEM networks, having been certified with the STEM School Label by the European Schoolnet body of the European Union. It is one of the 20 European ambassador schools of the STEM School Label and the only one from Greece. We also participate in eTwinning and European Space Agency (ESA) programs.

The school actively cooperates with the local community, while it belongs to the Greek network of school libraries, it participates in environmental programs, robotics contests, music projects, educational activities etc. We had the opportunity to experience some Erasmus projects, such as “SAFER”, and the Horizon project “Connect”.

Aims of the organization

  • To develop the creative potential of students.
  • To apply Freinnet techniques in our teaching such as interschool correspondence, free composition, the school magazine, fact-finding excursions.
  • To launch democratic principles manners and behavior.
  • To encourage positive reactions and cohesion among students.

What are the activities and experience of our school?

Our school teachers are well trained in intercultural education, environmental awareness, art studies, STEAM, robotics and in Freinnet techniques. We have lately participated in european, national and regional projects such as:

  • Act “The coastal and beachside ecosystem of my place” for the EU project CONNECT Inclusive open schooling through engaging and future-oriented science. (Horizon 2020/grant no. 872814)
  • Act for the Erasmus+ KA3 SAFER – SociAl competences and FundamEntal Rights for preventing bullying program for preventing school violence and bullying and promoting inclusive education.
  • Act for Ulysses Program on “Safe and Creative Use of the Internet” with the aim of planning and implementing cooperative activities in primary schools from Greece and Cyprus with an emphasis on encouraging cooperation, creativity, and critical thinking.
  • The remunerative recycling program entitled “Recycle, Save, Live”.
  • The “Network of Cooperative Schools of Heraklion” for the promotion of a democratic climate in the classroom using educational techniques of Freinnet pedagogy such as councils, newspapers, filmmaking, free texts, etc.
  • The contest Mission Zero and Moon Camp Challenge of the European Space Agency (ESA).
  • School competitions in sports such as basketball, volleyball, swimming etc.
